Signs and portents

A friend is having a few work issues at college, one of which is that he's got to be less judgemental when assessing the work of his students. Sorry, customers. Paying customers at that.

"I should have my mark reassessed," said one. "I didn't realise there were questions on the back of the sheet."

These students are training to be lawyers.

These students appear well on the way, practicing arguments to achieve a result with no strong moral position.

But have they been on the page turning course? It's a key skill in educational development, along with put your pens down now and write your own essays. Or is that just a sign of age?

If I was a teacher I'd keep a gun in my desk for those students

I've always imagined it would be a good thing to employ a lawyer who is less smart than you are.

Indeed, as Wendy says, it looks as though this student is being trained well!

What happened to brains? I blame these modules.

They could argue their way out of ANything.

Wendy: I hadn't thought of that. I'm too naive for words.

Madame DeF: this is the first generation that doesn't understand paper. All their homework was done by Googling the subject then cut'n'pasting stuff together.

Which is why some of the college assignments have begun "As stated earlier in this article..." And why the first citation on one paper was "ibid."

Lulu: the students, the parents and a lot of the colleagues...

Savanannah: nah, you lead, we slavishly follow.

Gadjo: no. Honestly. You can imagine how smart a local council solicitor can be.

Jimmy: painfully true.

Pat: brains are optional. Indeed, most days I think they're a painful luxury.

Scarlet and Willow: you and Wendy have made me see the error of my ways.
