Quotation

Having a drink and a chat in the Monkey's with Ken Barmy I accidentally knocked over my drink (I was telling him a story that appears in another place). As I tidied up Ken said to the barmaid:

"Please excuse my friend, he thinks he's Ralph Bellamy."

Bastard. I've been saving that quote for a special occasion for twenty years.

Ralph Bellamy? I only know him as one of the city tycoons in Trading Places. Can you explain?

Blimey Kev, you've done me a right favour here cos I had to look up who Ralph was - He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Awful Truth (1937) opposite Irene Dunne and Cary Grant...anyhow he was also in 'Roesemary's Baby' and I was trying to remember the name of this film the other day! But now I can't remember why I was trying to remember this....

Darn. He beat you to the Bellemy. I remember him as the creepy doctor in "Rosemary's Baby". Is he known for spilling his drink? Fill me in.

It's a gag from "His Girl Friday," where Cary Grant and Ralph Bellamy play rivals for the hand of Rosalind Russell (if you've not seen it you need to!). At one point Bellamy's protesting at Grant's flim-flamming an official and Grant brushes him aside with this remark to said official. (I've kept it vague so's not to spoil the fillum for you).

As usual, I am the only one to get the reference.
From now on, Kevin, you ARE Ralph Bellamy. Also, I know you have the capability of thinking yourself into BEING Ralph Bellamy.

I'm still waiting for a suitable moment to release my David Bellamy remark.
